Kevin Phillips: I wanted to continue in the Premier League with Birmingham City
Experienced forward signed new contract until 2011...
By Daniel Sheppard
Birmingham City striker Kevin Phillips believes he made the right decision in signing a one-year extension to his contract, which was set to end on June 30, for the Premier League side.
Although he had received offers from other clubs, Phillips, now 36-years-old, feels he is comfortable with being seen as an impact-substitute for Birmingham and understands competition will be tough for the forthcoming season.
"I want to stay as high in the game as I possibly can for as long as I possibly can and there's no higher place to be than the Premier League so to stay at Birmingham where I am happy and settled," Phillips told the club's website.
"Towards the end of last season I got more time on the pitch, coming on making an impact, and I would like to try and emulate that. I know there is going to be more competition for places but I still believe in my abilities.
"I am still fit enough and strong enough and the manager believes that because he has offered me the year. I am looking forward to the season starting and we will see how it pans out.
"There were offers from other clubs but I want to stay here."
Phillips made 19 Premier League appearances for Birmingham last season, 17 as a substitute, scoring four times, including a late winning double against Wolverhampton in a 2-1 home win on February 7.
