Former Portsmouth manager Paul Hart is set to take over the reins at recently relegated Hull City.

Hart was in charge of Portsmouth at the beginning of last season, before being replaced by Avram Grant, who was confirmed as the new West Ham United manager on Thursday.

Former boss Phil Brown was put on ‘gardening leave’ by The Tigers in March, and Iain Dowie took charge for the remainder of the season but was unable to stop the club sliding into the Championship. Now Hart's appointment in inevitable once Brown's severance package is finalised.

Dowie previously stated that he was keen to take over on a permanent basis at the KC Stadium, with much backing from the Hull players, but his commitment seems to have been to no avail as chairman Adam Pearson has instead lined up Hart for the position.

Hart's appointment will see him facing three of his former clubs next season. Hart helped Pompey avoid relegation in the 2008-09 Premier League season, after replacing Tony Adams. He then moved on to a five-game spell at Queens Park Rangers, before quitting, and finished the last campaign in charge of Crystal Palace.

This latest appointment will see Hart attempt to mend the morale of the Hull club, shaken by their relegation to the Championship plus the threat of financial difficulties and players wanting to leave - including star player Jimmy Bullard, who is rumoured to be on his way to Celtic.
