David Gill: A group of fans cannot own and run Manchester United
Chief executive has serious reservations about Red Knights' plans...
By Zack Wilson
Manchester United chief executive David Gill has expressed doubt about the prospects of the so-called 'green and gold' protest movement unsettling things at Old Trafford.
Gill made comments last week expressing a certain amount of doubt about the chances of success for the Red Knights' proposed takeover consortium.
The chief executive has seen nothing over the last few days to alter that assessement of how matters currently stand.
"That's my personal opinion," Gill explained to Sky Sports News.
"I'm asked about it and that's my personal opinion. All I can say is that in my experience of running a club, of being involved in a club for thirteen years and being involved in business befoe that, to have a group of people owning and running Manchester United would be difficult.
"That's a personal opinion."
Gill doesn't believe the protest movement is about to quietly dissipate and he views its passion as a positive reflection on the passionate nature of the club's support.
"I don't think it'll go away, I think there is a protest movement there and clearly a lot of those people do feel very exercised by it and passionate about it and that's one of the main strengths of Manchester United," he said.
"I saw some comments last week about me belittling that process - it couldn't be further from the truth. We understand it and that will be there.
"We hope that there will be even more red and white in the stadium next year. We'll have to see.
"That's what we endeavour to do. We're here with Alex and all his team preparing the players for next season and hoping that we do have that squad that can challenge for the key trophies."
Gill also confirmed that the likelihood of a sale by the Glazer family was almost certinaly nil.
"There were very clear public statements put out with our quarter three results last Fridaya and they couldn't have been clearer," he added.
"Put it this way - it's not stopping me sleeeping at night."
