Manchester United chief executive David Gill has declared that manager Sir Alex Ferguson will have a major say in the appointment of his successor at Old Trafford.

The 68-year-old tactician is in the twilight of a glittering career that has seen him remain at the forefront of United's affairs for 24-years, and Gill believes the Scot's input concerning potential candidates will be key to who lands the job when the ageing gaffer decided to call it a day.

However, the Red Devils' chief executive insists there have been no real indications that such a thing may come to pass in the immediate future.

"We don't know when Alex [Ferguson] is going to retire and long may he continue," Gill told The Independent.

Concerning the appointment of the club's next manager, he added: "It will be discussed with Alex, Bobby Charlton and the owners.

"I think Alex will be the key. He knows people. He will have a big role in advising and being a sounding board.

"I am sure we will talk with the owners and look at who is there and determine who we would like to appoint.

"It would be remiss of us not to use the expertise and knowledge that we have."

Jose Mourinho, who won the Champions League this season with the Inter Milan, has previously been linked with the Old Trafford hot-seat alongside Everton's David Moyes, but Ferguson's preference is yet unknown.
