Sunderland striker Darren Bent to miss England’s friendly against Mexico with hamstring injury

Three Lions forward’s World Cup place in doubt…
Sunderland striker Darren Bent’s World Cup place is in doubt after a hamstring injury ruled him out of England’s warm-up match with Mexico.

The 26-year-old has been unable to train with Fabio Capello’s squad and while he will certainly miss the first warm-up match, it is unclear whether he will be fit to play Japan in Austria on Sunday.

If Bent fails to recover in time to play Japan in England’s final friendly before they head to South Africa, he will almost certainly miss out on a World Cup place.

Capello has stated that if any player is unfit to play in the first match of the World Cup against the USA on June 12, they will not make his 23-man squad.

The hamstring injury comes as a massive blow to Bent, who remained injury-free for the majority of the season with Sunderland, where he scored 24 goals in an impressive campaign.
