Tottenham Hotspur edging closer to new stadium after submitting improved application for Northumberland Project
Club will present revised plans to Haringey Council this week...
By Andrew Headspeath
Tottenham Hotspur have today announced their new plans for the Northumberland Development Project, housing the club's proposed 56,250 seater stadium, to be submitted to Haringey Council this week.
The previous application received strong backing from the local community and fans alike back in 2008 – with over 800 letters of support sent to Haringey Council from individuals, groups and businesses.
Changes to the inital desgin of the complex are a result of discussions with several agencies, and the club is confident that the changes improve on the initial plans while directly reflecting Spurs' desire to find the very best solution for the football team and the area.
The improvements to the designs include a larger public square located on a raised podium, a new design for the hotel and residential buildings, an active courtyard setting for retained historic buildings and continuity of buildings along the High Road connecting North and South as well as a club museum and megastore.
The inclusion of other changes, such as the re-use of the Bill Nicholson Gates, the infamous 'Cockerel on the Ball' clock and Golden Cockerel statue, are an attempt to retain the club's identity and preserve the heritage and history asscociated with White Hart Lane.
Speaking about the changes to the design, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said in the club's press release: "We have looked again at the overall masterplan and design of the buildings in the south as well as the impact on Tottenham High Road. We have used this opportunity to make further design improvements."
However Levy was quick to ease the concerns of anyone put off by the idea of changes to already popular plans.
"We remain focussed and committed to delivering a world class, increased capacity stadium full of atmosphere," he said.
Levy also stressed his thanks to everyone involved in the project.
"Schemes of this magnitude involve much time and effort by many parties and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has taken part in the consultation process to date" he said.
