Red Devils cross the Irish Sea to celebrate opening of new stadium

Manchester United will play a pre-season friendly match against an Airtricity League XI, to celebrate the opening of the new Aviva stadium in Dublin

The match on August 4 will form part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s preparations for the 2010-11 season. The Red Devils last played in the Irish capital in 2002.

“I am really looking forward to going back to Dublin," Ferguson told United's official website. "We have a massive fan base in Ireland, it will be great to play a match on their home turf and I know the Irish supporters will make the atmosphere very special.”

Current first team players John O'Shea and Darron Gibson both represent the Republic, while club legends include Frank Stapleton, Paul McGrath, Denis Irwin and Roy Keane.

There are estimated to be 850,000 United fans in Ireland, with 25 per cent of all football supporters following the Mancunian outfit.
