Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been assured by club chief executive David Gill that there will be funds to spend in the transfer market this summer.

Rumours have persisted that United have no cash to use for reinforcements because of the burden of debt with which the club are saddled following the takeover by the Glazer family.

However, Gill insists that the reality of the situation is different - and Ferguson has already signed two players for next season in the shape of Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.

"I can look you in the eye and tell you straight that we have the transfer funds available to the manager," Gill told the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association magazine.

"Targets have been discussed already, but it's not our style to talk about names and it never will be."

Gill has also insisted that the green and gold scarves worn by many fans in protest at the Glazer regime are not proving a distraction for the players.

"I've asked the players and they say they are not distracted," the chief executive added.

"But if your question is 'Would I prefer all red and white instead of gold and green when you have a full stadium and are playing host to famous opposition?', of course I would."
