Everton's Phil Jagielka bemused by disallowed goal against Stoke City
Toffees out of European football race as defender's header ruled out...
By Alex Fisher
The Toffees had the ball in the net through Jagielka in the 72nd minute but the defender was denied his first goal of the season by the referee’s assistant’s flag.
The decision means David Moyes' side can no longer qualify for European football next season, with Jagielka initially in the dark with regards to the decision.
“I wasn’t aware [the goal had been disallowed]”, he told Sky Sports. “As you can tell by my silly celebration.”
As Mikel Arteta’s corner flew into the penalty area Jagielka rose to head past Asmir Begovic but referee Howard Webb’s assistant spotted that Victor Anichebe was in an offside position when Jagielka headed the ball towards goal.
Jagielka admitted there was still some confusion in the Everton ranks after the game.
He continued: “We didn’t know why [the goal was ruled offside].
“We’ve got a couple of ideas. If it was offside, I think it’s a little bit harsh, it’s hard to tell if he’s interfering or not.”
