Barcelona's Lionel Messi: Beating Real Madrid was a key step to the title
The diminutive Argentine scored first...
By Ewan Macdonald
The World Player of the Year said: "Will this win us the league? There are still games left to go. We have some tough away matches, but yes, we took a big and important step tonight.
"It was a close game because both teams respect each other a lot - we both know each other well so there's a lot of respect. But when we had chances we took them, and that's why we won."
The current Liga top scorer then moved to play down any notion of a personal battle between himself and Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
"It wasn't about that - Barca were superior to Real Madrid, and that's all that matters," he reasoned.
"We gained three very important points here. We are leading the league, alone, and now we have a real advantage for the rest of the tournament.
"As for the Champions League? Let's go one step at a time. We can make more history - a lot more - if it comes our way, but we need to keep on working hard."
