Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has admitted that much of his side’s Champions League aspirations rest on the shoulders of Carlos Tevez, comparing the Argentine’s importance to that of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

"Carlos [Tevez] is most important for us like Rooney is for United,” said Mancini ahead of City's clash with Birmingham.

Tevez has been in sensational form this season, aiding his side’s top four pursuit with 20 goals and seven assists in 27 Premier League appearances, his best goal return to date in English football.

The Citizens find themselves in pole position in the race for fourth place, leading fifth placed Tottenham by a point, with Mancini side still to play the North London club at the Eastlands before the end of the season.

And the former Inter boss hopes that his side can tackle their remaining fixtures with the strong team possible.

He added: "We have had a lot of injuries. I hope that in the last six games we can play with a strong team."
