Bayern Munich struggled to break through for much of the 90 minutes in Tuesday's Champions League game against Manchester United, but a late Ivica Olic strike helped the Bavarians to a 2-1 win.

Striker Mario Gomez, who came close to scoring the winner himself with a shot in the 90th minute, was thrilled with the atmosphere in the Allianz Arena and said afterwards that he believs Bayern are sitting in pole position to reach the semi-finals.

"We were utterly determined to win here. Apart from the start, when we were unlucky, we gave a decent account of ourselves," Gomez was quoted as saying on the official Bayern website.

"The crowd really gave us that little bit extra. I’ve never experienced an atmosphere like it here, and a number of the other players are saying the same thing. We’re all thrilled, and hope it’s the same for the rest of the season.

"We controlled possession well, we let the ball do the work, and we made chances. A draw’s enough for us in the return. I think we have the better position going in."
