Chelsea confirm Ricardo Carvalho is out for four weeks with ankle ligament damage
Portuguese faces spell on sidelines at vital time...
By Zack Wilson
The Blues do not yet know whether or not the player will require surgery on the problem, with further scans scheduled to take place on Friday.
"The club will be able to determine over the next 24 hours whether the injury requires corrective surgery," a statement on the club's official website reads.
"However we can confirm at this point that he'll be out for at least four weeks."
The news comes at a bad time for Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti with the run-in to the climax of the season gathering momentum.
The Italian claimed earlier on Thursday that his side now faced "nine cup finals" if they were to win the Premier League title.
