Arsenal midfielder Alex Song: Arsene Wenger's 'trust' allows us to score late goals

Patient game pays off for Gunners...

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song believes the faith placed in his players by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is the reason behind his side's late winning goals in recent games.

The Gunners struck late at Stoke and Hull to record valuable wins in the hunt for the Premier League trophy.

That willingness to keep on doing the right things without panicking springs from the mutual trust between players and manager.

"The manager trusts us to do the job," the Cameroon international told the Gunners' official website.

"If the referee says we have four minutes or two minutes left then the boss says ‘don’t panic, be confident and play’. That means if the opposition team drop we have the chance to score.

"If the game is not finished we know we can score at anytime."

Song missed Nicklas Bendtner's late winner at Hull City, due to not playing, but admitted it got him somewhat excited while watching the game at home.

"I was like a crazy man. I jumped everywhere. I was watching it with my son and he did not know what was happening. But when Nicklas scored I just said ‘yeeeeeessssssss’," he revealed.

"It is very difficult to watch your friends when you don’t play. But I had confidence in my team. We have the players to come in and do well.

"And now we are in a strong position and we will fight in the games that are left.

"The mentality has changed for us. Everyone has in their head that we need to do something this year.

"It is very important for us."

We've heard from all the big players from tonight's games as Milan and Zenit record first leg victories.

For Milan progression to next round seems inevitable after they thumped Arsenal 4-0 at the San Siro.

However things are very different for Zenith, and despite their win you may actually make Benfica favourites given they scored two away goals in Russia.

All this focus on the Arsenal and Milan game should not take away from another cracker earlier tonight between Zenit and Benfica. The Russians came from a goal down to lead 2-1 in the closing minutes before Oscar Cardozo levelled things for Benfica, but it wasn't over there as Roman Shirokov won the game for Zenit in the 88th minute.

Here's the thoughts of Benfica coach Jorge Jesus who felt his side deserved a point from the game

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny bemoaned his side's luck tonight but refused to give up. Here's some of his quotes, the full story is here.

"They were the better team on the night and that's the story of the day.

"We have to keep fighting, pick ourselves up, get the confidence back and challenge in the other competitions and in the second leg of this tie too.

"They punished us on every occasion; they scored some quality goals and they deserved to win."

I'm just watching the highlights of the game and some of Arsenal's defending really was shocking. It really makes you wonder why Wenger didn't bolster the defence in January.
