Manchester City have confirmed that Wayne Bridge has undergone an operation on a hernia and could miss the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old, who has recently returned from a knee injury, is expected to be sidelined for at least a month and possibly longer.

That means that an eventful campaign for the left-back could be ending with another disappointment after several months when his private life has been the focus of intense media attention.

City have plenty of cover at left-back, with Javier Garrido and Sylvinho at the club. Greg Cunningham, recently boosted by a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad, is also an option for Roberto Mancini.

Joleon Lescott and Gareth Barry can also play on the left side of the defence.
