Portsmouth to fight nine-point penalty for going into administration
Deduction would mean certain relegation
By Anthony Sciarrino
Portsmouth’s relegation from the Premier League could be assured as they will have nine points deducted after their administration was deemed valid on Tuesday by a High Court judge.
The struggling club, who were forced to fire 85 of their staff in an attempt to cut costs, will have the points penalty enforced at a Premier League board meeting, a massive blow to their already slim survival chances.
However, the administrator for Pompey, Andrew Andronikou, is hopeful that the decision will be reversed.
“Yes, it is a Premier League rule but that rule has never been tested and that is what I will do,” Andronikou told The Express.
If the penalty is upheld, it will leave Portsmouth with just 10 points, leaving them 17 points behind Wolverhampton for the final safety spot in the Premier League with just nine games remaining.Become a fan of Goal.com UK's Facebook fan page for all the latest news and insight into everything related to the beautiful game!
