Adam Johnson has admitted some mixed feelings after his injury-time goal helped Manchester City grab a point against Sunderland at the weekend.

The winger came off the bench to score a beautiful curling shot, but admitted that he would have rather scored his first goal for the club at any other ground than the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year-old was a boyhood fan of the Black Cats, and could have ended up playing for Steve Bruce's men if City hadn't come in with a superior offer in January.

“If there was one place I probably wouldn’t have wanted to score my first goal, it would probably have been here," Johnson said according to Press Association Sport.

“But I am just thankful I have finally got off the mark because I am a Manchester City player now.

“But that’s how it goes, isn’t it? That’s football.”

For much of the match it looked like Roberto Mancini's side would drop another crucial three points in their quest for fourth place in the league, as Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon kept out everything that came his way.

Johnson admitted that it could have been a different game if not for the Scot's performance.

“The point, especially after our first-half performance, is a good point," he said.

“We probably dominated the second half, we them pegged back in and we created a number of clear-cut chances. We probably could have nicked it if it wasn’t for Craig.”

And with the race for Champions League qualification hotting up, the former Middlesbrough man hopes his side improve in upcoming games as they aim to reach Europe's premier club competition.

“Our main aim is to be winning games and putting a good run together coming towards the end of the season," he said.

“We still have a game in hand and we are looking in quite good shape, but we have definitely got to improve.”

And with his first goal for the club in an encouraging performance, Johnson still harbours hopes of a late World Cup call-up.

“I would love to think I have an outside chance, but I have just got to try to keep performing for Manchester City and hopefully, I get the call," he said.

“You never know, stranger things have happened.”
