Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon believes the Black Cats good run of form is down to being able to field a settled defence.

Steve Bruce’s side have lost just one of their last seven games after a terrible run of 14 league games without a win.

Gordon played a starring role in the Black Cats’ 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday and the Scotland international believes he is starting to develop an understanding with his defenders.

"If you get a solid back four and goalkeeper playing together you get an understanding," he told BBC Newcastle.

"It can help us if we can keep everybody together."

Sunderland have been without some key players due to injuries this season and Gordon says John Mensah, who has a long-term back problem, is an integral part of the Black Cats defence.

"He doesn't need to do a great deal of training, he's actually quite fit, so to come out and just play games he is able to do that," he said.

"He's a bit like Ledley King. He can do a little bit of training during the week, and then turn up and be one of the best players on the pitch week in, week out."
