Rangers manager Walter Smith warns his side against complacency

Glasgow club have been tipped for a treble this season

Rangers manager Walter Smith has cautioned his players that they will not win anything if they play as they did on Sunday - when Dundee United came back from a 3-1 deficit to force a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay.

Smith has heard talks that his squad could nab a treble this season, but has dismissed such reports of presumed success, insisting that his team will have to work hard in order to win any trophies this season, let alone a treble.

“I just feel that all the talk of trebles and winning the league, just because we have a gap, is really premature, Smith told the Herald Scotland.

“If we are going to succeed we now face a really tough cup tie at Tannadice and we still have to go there in the championship.

"People are making assumptions but they are not taking fully into account how hard it is going to be for us between now and the end of the season.

“When we went 3-1 up we should have been able to see the game out. That’s what we have been doing over the course of the season but we didn’t do that today.

"For me, that sends out a clear message to everyone that we won’t achieve what we want to achieve this season unless we remain fully focused on what we have to do.

"Complacency could undermine everything we are trying to do. The expectation is that we have already won the league just because we have a gap at the top.”

Rangers are leading the Scottish Premier League by 13 points, and will play St Mirren in the CIS Insurance Cup final on Sunday to try and earn their first trophy of the season.
