Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist hails Kris Boyd as the best in the business

Prolific marksman still waiting for century milestone...

SPL: Kris Boyd, Rangers v Aberdeen (PA)
Former Scotland talisman Ally McCoist has hailed Rangers striker Kris Boyd as one of the best goalscorers in the business despite his current lean spell.

The Rangers assistant manager insisted he had no fears that Boyd would rediscover his shooting boots, after failing to find the target in his last three outings for the Ibrox side.

Boyd's 22-goal haul this season has helped the Scottish giants open up a staggering 13-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League over rivals Celtic.

However, after battling back from a double hernia operation the former Kilmarnock striker has struggled to find his full-fitness and has been doubly frustrated with his drought being within touching distance of 100 SPL goals.

“He will be fine, I genuinely don't worry about Boydy [Kris Boyd],” McCoist said, according to the Press Association Sport.

“It's amazing how many times this happens, not just to Boydy, it happens to players in all sorts of walks of life.

“They are so near to a particular record or target and it just takes them a little bit longer to get there then they would hope.

“That's the case with Boydy but the one thing that will never desert him is his ability to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Make no mistake about it, any opposition defence that plays against Boydy will know that and will know he is arguably the best in the business at doing that.”

Boyd famously broke Henrik Larsson's record when he struck five times past Dundee United in a 7-1 rout to become the SPL's most prolific goalscorer.

Yet McCoist is not expecting anything similar when Rangers face them again in the Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday.

He added: “I would certainly bet against it being 7-1.”
