Portsmouth loan star Jamie O'Hara: I'm willing to take a pay cut
Midfielder wants to help out cash-strapped club
By David Middleton
The south coast outfit, who are anchored to the foot of the Premier League, announced through administrator Andrew Andronikou on Wednesday that 85 members of staff would be made redundant.
Director Mark Jacob was relieved of his duties as a result while chief executive Peter Storrie stepped down on Friday after fierce criticism from supporters.
It's believed some players on the books may now be asked to take pay-cuts on their astronomical salaries in an attempt to secure the club's future. And the Tottenham Hotspur loanee admitted he would agree to such a reduction.
“If it's something everyone has to do, then it's something everyone has to do,” O'Hara told a press conference.
“On another level, every person lives to their means and people have to look after their families.
“Footballers earn a lot of money, but they also spend a lot of money because that's what they earn.
“People have to look after their families and that's something they will have to look at.”
Despite a recent upturn in form on the pitch, which saw the ailing side reach the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Birmingham City last weekend, their financial woes have continued with a number of their shopping centre outlets being closed.
And O'Hara admitted it was a troubling time for the club, saying: “It's difficult to see friends you have made losing their jobs.
“It has been such a difficult time but I think everyone involved in the club has been fantastic.
“It's sad to see people go because obviously, the players don't really suffer in a way. We all get paid and we still play football every week.
“It's the masseurs, the tea ladies; they are the people this is going to affect in the long run. That's the disappointing part of going into administration.”
