Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra set to return after hamstring injury
Ibrox boss Smith welcomes Algerian back into heart of defence
By Alex Stamp
Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra has given the SPL league leaders a boost by insisting he has a ‘good chance’ of returning from his hamstring injury this weekend.
The influential centre-back aggravated a hamstring strain during the Old Firm derby win over Celtic, and has since missed three games - including Algeria’s friendly against Serbia.
However the defender has declared himself fit to return, and hopes to play against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
Speaking to Blues News, he said: "I just needed to take a rest because with the hamstring it's difficult to know if it can be bad.
"I had to be careful. It's been a week and a half and I feel better, I hope I can play on Sunday and I have a good chance of playing."
Bougherra’s return could see him rekindle his fruitful partnership with David Weir at the heart of the Rangers defence, and Walter Smith welcomed the prospect of his return.
He said: "He'll be fit to play against Dundee United and I'll be glad to have everyone back."
However he was quick to praise the form of 18-year-old centre-back Danny Wilson, who had stepped in to replace Bougherra.
Smith added: "He has been doing very well for us and has been excellent with his performances."
