Fulham manager Roy Hodgson wants to write a new chapter in the club's history against Juventus
Far cry from veteran manager's 2007 when club was fighting relegation
By Alan McGuinness
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is aiming to write a new chapter in the club's history against Juventus in the Europa League.
Hodgson took the reigns at Craven Cottage in 2007 and has masterminded an extraordinary upturn in the club's fortunes.
On Thursday evening, his side will take on Juventus in the first leg of their last 16 tie the Europa League.
"Given our position when I came to the club in 2007 [in the relegation zone] I don't think many people would have actually given any credence to the fact that we'd be this far forward now in our development," Hodgson said in his pre-match press conference.
"Apart from appearing in the last vestiges of the Intertoto Cup, we haven't had any European history so we are making history as we go along."
Hodgson believes this season's run in the competition - which has seen Fulham dump out holders Shakhtar Donetsk - can aid their development.
He said: "The history we are making this year is a very important step in the club's history and one which I hope will provide that stronger foundation which clubs like ourselves need to make.
"These adventures in Europe can help us in terms of us becoming a stronger football club but we have a long way to go, mind, before we match the Inter Milans, the Juves and the Milans."
