Alex McLeish lauds 'brilliant response' after Birmingham City's victory at Portsmouth
City boss praises goal hero Jerome...
By Richard Parry
City led the match 2-0 at half-time courtesy of Cameron Jerome’s brace, but the Scot admits that Nwankwo Kanu’s stoppage time goal gave the contest an unnerving finale.
"I thought there were a few more minutes to go [after Kanu scored] so it was a relief to hear the final whistle because it was a bit of an onslaught," McLeish told Sky Sports.
The Scottish tactician revealed that he’d discussed Portsmouth’s mindset prior to the match, and how the south coast club may have expected his side to have been low on confidence following the weekend’s FA Cup disappointment.
"We spoke about it before the game," added McLeish.
"we said that possibly Portsmouth might think that our confidence had dropped and maybe we don’t have much to play for this season with our points already being at a good total.
"But the players were great, I thought they responded brilliantly. We kept the ball well, had four or five chances in the first half, the first half was fantastic."
McLeish continued by praising the performance of goalscorer Cameron Jerome.
On his striker’s brace the Birmingham boss insisted: "Cameron’s capable of that if we can get him into those situations. He can finish, he’s an instinctive finisher."
