Manchester City winger Adam Johnson believes World Cup 2010 has come too soon for him

Youngster believes only injuries to others would give him a place in Capello's plans...

Manchester City winger Adam Johnson has acknowledged he is unlikely to force his way into Fabio Capello's England squad before this summer's World Cup.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form since signing for Manchester City from Middlesbrough in January, leading some to suggest he was in line for a Three Lions call-up.

He was named in the Italian's provisional 30-man squad for last week's friendly against Egypt, but did not make the list when that was reduced to a final 24.

"I know I didn't make the cut for Egypt, but just to see my name in the senior call-up was brilliant," Johnson told City's official website.

"The next step is to play. The World Cup squad would be difficult, but there's a lot of football to be played and there could be injuries along the way.

"It was a bit disappointing not to be involved at Wembley but I've still come a long way in a short space of time. But this World Cup has probably come a bit too soon for me."

Versatility is an attribute Capello might well bear in mind when it comes his final squad selection, and Johnson knows that his ability to play on either wing will only help his case for inclusion.

"I like playing out there on the right, and if you look at the top wingers in the world, I think they can all play on opposite sides," he added.

"Obviously the manager (Capello) has worked with a lot of top-class players and he's seen what effect it can have."
