West Ham United striker Carlton Cole: I feared Hammers exit
Hammers star thankful to be still at Upton Park...
By Steve Alexander
West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has revealed how he expected to be sold prior to the clubs January takeover, to help ease their crippling debts.
There was a fear the clubs top players would have to be sold before David Sullivan and David Gold bought out the Icelandic owners in January and Cole was worried he would be one of the stars to leave.
"It was a fiasco before they arrived," Cole told Sporting Life. "It looked like we were going to have to sell some of our better players.
"Gold and Sullivan have come in and tidied everything up. They've done a really good job and everyone is very focused."
Cole is fit again after a troublesome knee injury and came on as substitute in England's 3-1 victory over Egypt last Wednesday.
The striker is grateful though that his club managed to hold onto all their big name players as they battle to avoid relegation this season.
He said: "We had a lot of players linked to leaving the club and it was really unsettling for all of us. It wasn't just the first team regulars, but even fringe players were getting linked away from the club.
"If we were going to keep our heads above water, we were probably going to need to sell some of our better players.
"That's what was going to happen. Thankfully, it didn't turn out that way. As soon as the two David's came in they changed everything.
"I don't know if anyone approached my agent about me. Because I was injured at the time, everything was kept away from me."
