Portsmouth boss Avram Grant overjoyed with latest FA Cup victory
Pompey progress to the last four amid financial woe
By Anthony Sciarrino
Portsmouth manager Avram Grant has hailed his side’s resilience after its 2-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday which sent his team to the FA Cup semi-finals.
Despite sitting at the foot of the Premier League standings, Portsmouth now find themselves in the last four of the FA Cup courtesy of second-half strikes from Frederic Piquionne.
And with all of Pompey's issues on and off the field, Grant has not had a whole lot to smile about this season, but his elation was apparent after his side's victory.
“It’s more than big – more than football,” the Israeli told The Telegraph. He continued: “I’m very proud. You can break many things but you can’t break our spirit.
“Some things in your life you never forget, and this is one of those moments.”
Portsmouth is looking to replicate its FA Cup triumph of 2008, albeit under drastically different circumstances. After defeating Cardiff City 1-0 at Wembley for the silverware, they wound up in eighth place on the league table.
Amid the off-field woe - Grant feels his club merit a semi-final place, insisting: “This club deserves more than anyone to be at Wembley because the players and fans are victims of things done by others. I will say it again and again until someone listens.”
