Fernando Torres is so determined that Liverpool's season will not end in abject failure that he's been hitting the gym on his days off to aid his return to full fitness.

The Spanish international played 45-minutes against France in midweek but is still well short of match sharpness. And with only 10 games remaining in the campaign, the striker, according to manager Rafa Benitez, is desperate to play his part in earning Liverpool the much-coveted fourth place spot in the Premier League.

“We still have some good players around but Fernando [Torres] is a key player for us, the same as Steven Gerrard,” Benitez told Press Association Sport.

“Fernando can score goals on his own so hopefully he will be okay.

“He was training on Friday – even though we had a day off - so that means he wants to improve and wants to be physically well so that is also good news for us.

“Fernando is not fully match fit, not really. One week ago he was not fully fit for games and he cannot be in one week - it is not a miracle.

“He has to keep working and he has spent some time in the gym and he can get better every week.”

The Liverpool sharpshooter scored his 13th goal of the season in the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers last weekend after being out for five weeks following a knee operation.

The Reds currently lie in sixth place, a point behind Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, but have key personnel returning with playmakers Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun plus full-back Glen Johnson back for the end of season run-in.
