Sir Alex Ferguson welcomes defensive duo Nemanja Vidic & Rio Ferdinand back to Manchester United first-team

Influential pair to re-forge partnership.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his relief at being able to welcome back key defensive duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to his first-team.

Roaming centre back Ferdinand is expected to be start the test against Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Serbian stopper Vidic will be fully fit and available for selection midweek; against AC Milan in the concluding leg of the Champions League tie between the two European giants.

"It gives us a boost because their partnership over the years has been consistently fantastic," Ferguson told the Daily Mail.

The manager also spoke of Owen Hargreaves' recovery following a long-term and complex knee injury. The anchoring midfielder played a part in United's reserve fixture against local rivals Manchester City earlier in the week.

"Hargreaves has shown that's he's almost ready to play again… He's been training with the first team, which is good to see."

According to the paper, Ferguson also believes Ryan Giggs is close to a return following an arm break in February.
