Gianfranco Zola backs West Ham United keeper Robert Green to go to World Cup 2010 with England
Italian believes Green is Capello's best bet...
By Alex Dimond
West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola believes Robert Green should be England's No. 1 goalkeeper at this summer's World Cup in South Africa.
Green started for England in mid-week in the 3-1 win over Egypt, the last game before Fabio Capello picks his provisional World Cup squad.
"I think he is good enough to start for England," Zola said.
"It's about what Capello thinks but he has been in very good form."
The 30-year-old did not have the best of starts to the season, but has progressed as the campaign has gone on and has been impressive in recent weeks. And it is that form that Zola believes has impressed his fellow Italian.
"He didn't start the season very well but the last few months he has been very good," he said.
"In my opinion, he has improved because he has learnt from his mistakes.
"I have seen him playing and training and I see him improving. His attitude towards his work is excellent and I'm sure the England staff have seen that too.
"He has always had talent but when things weren't going his way he worked harder to get into the national team and be the number one.
"It is in his hands and I am sure he is focused and determined to keep the position he has now."
Despite Green's form, West Ham are still only three points above the Premier League relegation zone. They play Bolton at the weekend in an important game for both sides."I think three points tomorrow are important because not only are you getting three points for yourself, but you are also denying the opposition, who are more or less in the same position as us, three points," Zola said.
"For that reason, it's a massive, massive game.
"For me, on paper Bolton's not an easy game because they always have done very well against us. But tomorrow is another story.
"They are trying to play differently [under new boss Owen Coyle] and we will see what happens. I am determined to break that bad tradition we have against them."
