Macclesfield Town manager Keith Alexander dies at home aged 53
One of Britain's first black managers tragically passes away...
By Zack Wilson
Alexander passed away at home after his team's game with Notts County on Tuesday night.
The Nottingham-born 53-year-old had enjoyed an extensive playing career in the lower leagues before becoming one of the first black managers in the English game.
Alexander managed Lincoln City and Peterborough United, amongst others, before taking over at Macclesfield in 2008.
He also played international football for St Lucia.
He had taken time off work recently feeling ill but had returned to work reportedly keen to get back into action on the training ground.
Alexander suffered a cerebral aneurysm in November 2003, when he underwent life-saving surgery at Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital. He returned to work at Lincoln in February 2004.
A statement on Macclesfield's official website reads:
"It is our sad duty to report that Keith Alexander passed away today after arriving home from Macclesfield Town's game at Notts County last night.
"Keith was a splendid man. He will be sorely missed at the Moss Rose and by everyone involved in football.
"Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this very difficult time."
Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry had worked with Alexander extensively and knew him well.
"I really can't believe it," Fry told Sky Sports News.
"Keith, when I was manager of Barnet, was one of my players. He performed brilliantly on the field for me and off it in the community.
"He was always into coaching and went into management early.
"I think he had five years at Lincoln when they got into the play-offs every year.
"When I became owner of Barnet he was the ideal guy because he could run a club on a shoestring budget and that's what he did for me at Peterborough.
"It's absolutely terrible news."
Many of Peterborough's recent crop of up and coming stars such as Aaron McLean and George Boyd were signed by Alexander during his time at Posh.
"You won't find a more dedicated man at any club, league or non-league," Fry added.
