Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish insists he will not bankrupt his club in the upcoming summer transfer window.

McLeish’s squad have been one of the surprises of the Premier League season, amassing 40 points from their first 27 games, good enough for eighth place ahead of the likes of Europa League participants Fulham and Everton.

Carson Yeung, Birmingham City's Hong Kong-based owner, is expected to provide £40 million this summer to improve the squad, but McLeish warns that the money must be spent smartly.

“We have to work according to our means and the bottom line is that you see the massive wage bills at English clubs and it’s hard to sustain it," McLeish told the Daily Star.

He continued: “We have to get the balance right.”

Among Birmingham's top transfer targets are Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, Celtic winger Aiden McGeady, and Rangers hit-man Kris Boyd.
