Everton star Steven Pienaar arrested over drink drive offence

Police confirm man has also been charged with "failure to comply with traffic sign"

Everton winger Steven Pienaar, 27, was arrested at the weekend after police discovered that he had been driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. He has been charged with a drink-driving offence, and also a failure to comply with a traffic sign, it has been revealed.

The arrest occurred in Liverpool city centre and Pienaar is now due to appear in court before Liverpool Magistrates on March 9.

"Merseyside Police can confirm that a 27-year-old man has been charged with drink driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign," a police spokesperson is reported to have told The Telegraph.

"He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged later that day.

"Steven Pienaar from Woolton will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on 9 March, 2010."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Everton told The Daily Mail that the club would make "no comment" on what is a "private matter".
