Sunderland boss Steve Bruce blasts players for indiscipline against Portsmouth
Black Cats gaffer raging at Cattermole and Meyler's red cards...
By Matthew Harold
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was left fuming after his side’s indiscipline cost the Black Cats a vital victory against the Premier League's bottom side Portsmouth.
Bruce watched as midfielders Lee Cattermole and David Meyler were sent off by referee Kevin Friend in the second half and having only nine men cost his side two vital points on their visit to Fratton Park.
Darren Bent converted an early penatly - an incident that saw Ricardo Rocha sent off for the hosts - but Sunderland allowed the 10 men back into the game with both their indiscipline and ineffectual play. Portsmouth then grabbed a late equaliser through Aruna Dindane.
After the clash the Black Cats boss told Sky Sports: “Sometimes as a manager you look and you always try to defend your players. Unfortunately today we’ve given the onus back to Portsmouth.
"The one thing we didn’t need to do was to give the referee any decisions to make, in terms of being rash and stupid and unfortunately we have. We threw all the onus back to Portsmouth through our own stupidity when we should be professional enough to see it through and it's ridiculous.”
