Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has decided to withdraw his appeal against the additional one-match ban he received after appealing his recent violent conduct charge.
The United centre-back was handed an original three-game suspension folllowing an incident involving Hull City's Craig Fagan in the recent game at Old Trafford.
He appealed that decision and the FA increased the ban to four games after deeming that that appeal was frivolous.
He now avoids receiving an additional ban which would have taken his total suspension to five matches and will be available for the League Cup final against Aston Villa on February 28.

Arsenal travel to The Stadium of Light to take on Martin O'Neill's resurgent Sunderland, while Norwich City and Swansea City face off in a juicy, promoted-side battle. QPR, the other team who escaped the jaws of the Championship last term, face off against fellow strugglers Blackburn.

Of course, the biggest talking point at Old Trafford will be Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez re-locking horns, with the latter facing United for the first time after receiving an eight game ban for racially abusing the former. Both managers have been outspoken in their defence of their players this week, with Sir Alex Ferguson musing in today's programme notes that his "biggest regret is the way Patrice has been castigated in some quarters for standing up to racism".

As with in the Goal.com towers this week, debate has raged on Twitter as to who Sir Alex Ferguson should pair Wayne Rooney with for today’s showstopper with Liverpool. Chicharito and Danny Welbeck have got their fair share of fans, while Dimitar Berbatov is the romantics’ choice, following his spectacular overhead effort in the corresponding fixture last term. Stoic defenders of Michael Owen seem few and far between though.
