Sunderland need a result against Portsmouth - Steve Bruce

Bruce hoping for points against Pompey

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce takes his Black Cats to Portsmouth on Tuesday evening hoping to end a run that has not witnessed a victory in the Premier League since the 1-0 triumph over Arsenal on 21 November, 2009.

As Bruce aims to halt the club's slide down the league table, he is acutely aware that Sunderland have not won an away game since the first fixture of the current season. He attributes the prolonged run of poor results to a combination of injuries and suspensions.

"I knew when I came here that the club had fought off relegation for two years and I knew it would not always be a bed of roses," Bruce explained to Times Online.

"The dressing-room is okay but disappointed and we have to deal with it and come through," he said.

"Injuries and suspensions have affected us badly, but there’s nothing I would do differently with the benefit of hindsight.

"I’m the same manager that got us off to the start we had six months ago. We just need a result [against Portsmouth]."

Sunderland are currently 13th in the division; they have ten points more than Portsmouth.
