Wigan boss Roberto Martinez: Fabio Capello should pick Chris Kirkland as England's No 1
Spaniard says shot-stopper has left injury woes in the past
By Adithya Ananth
With no clear cut indication on the Italian's preferred choice among shot-stoppers ahead of the tournament in South Africa, the Latics boss believes Kirkland can make the cut despite his past injury problems.
"I keep looking at the other England keepers and I don't see anyone better," said Martinez, according to The Mirror.
"His label with injuries has not helped him at all, but it should be a football decision.
"If he can play in the next 15 games I think he will be in the England squad. His performances so far have shown me he should be."
The Spaniard insisted that Kirkland's injuries have become manageable as the 28-year-old has learned to cope with his problems.
Martinez added: "His body has got used to it, he follows the advice of the physios and doctors. He knows when an injury is serious or is just a niggle. I think he was growing before and had a big body to control, now he understands better.
"I can guarantee that Chris is a reliable character. I am 100 per cent sure that he will be in that squad. The only battle is to get rid of that label."
