Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar: It's good to be back playing
Veteran Dutchman delighted to have sealed return
By Alan Dawson
Manchester United's goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, 39, is thrilled to have returned to Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team.
The Dutch goalkeeper was permitted leave on compassionate grounds as his wife, Annemarie, recovered from a brain haemorrhage.
With Annemarie making progress, Van der Sar has refocussed his attention on football.
He told United Review: "It feels really good to be back playing.
"It has been a stop-start season for me and you miss your weekly routine of training and games. But if feels great to be back in the swing of things and playing for United again."
Van der Sar recently won the praise of manager Ferguson, who is believed to be requesting the Dutchman stay at Old Trafford for a further year. The ageing glovesman turns 40 in October, but Sir Alex believes he can still guard goal sufficiently."Every manager speaks highly of his players and I am sure other managers say the same about their goalkeepers but I know that I get good recognition here at United - from the players and the manager.
"It is always good to hear you have the support and trust of the people you work with.
"It is good to know I have that here."
