Hull City manager Phil Brown has played down fears regarding the long-term fitness of Ian Ashbee, insisting his captain will return before the season's end.

The Tigers midfielder, who is battling against a degenerative bone condition, has not kicked a ball since last May when he also damaged knee ligaments.

Despite undergoing surgery in America, the 33-year-old is still yet to recover fully and question marks are being raised as to whether he may be forced to retire.

However, Brown has quashed such claims, telling the News of the World: “The good news is he [Ian Ashbee] doesn't need a further operation. Now it's all about rehabilitation and he'll play when he's ready.

“I'm an optimist and think Ash will play again before the end of the season. That has to be the challenge.”

The former Cambridge United player has made more than 220 league starts for Hull, although his last was against Aston Villa in May 2009.
