Arsene Wenger has pleaded with Arsenal supporters to keep faith in his long-term vision for the club, despite being without a trophy in five years.

The Frenchman, who joined the north London club more than a decade ago, reassured the Gunners that he will bring sustained success to the Emirates Stadium.

Some supporters groups have begun to question whether Wenger's policy in nurturing through youth, rather than raiding the club's coffers, will ever yield the silverware they crave.

However, despite losing to Manchester United 3-1 at home last weekend and facing another Premier League title clash with Chelsea on Sunday, Wenger remains steadfast in his belief that Arsenal's time will come.

He told his club's official website: “I do not understand that too much [why supporters are disgruntled], because we are six points off the leader with 14 games to go; we are in a strong position and we are qualified in the Champions League.

“We are in a very healthy financial situation, we have a very young team compared to all the others.

“You can always be pessimistic, or you can always be optimistic – but if you analyse our situation realistically, you have many reasons to be optimistic.

“Don't forget the other clubs in England are big as well. They invest more money than we do, and we are still there [at the top of the Premier League].”

Victory against near neighbours Chelsea on Sunday would bring the Gunners to within three points of the top-spot, although defeat would all but leave them out of serious contention for the title.

Added Wenger: “Of course the result on Sunday will have an importance, but it won't be over [the title race].

“We will fight until the last second of the season because you can see that everybody drops points.

“At the end of the day it could be down to the team which believes more than the others.”
