Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is delighted with his team's 1-0 victory over Everton that sent his side into the fourth spot, albeit temporarily.

The Reds were a man short for a majority of the game after Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Marouane Fellaini, who was himself lucky to escape the wrath of the referee.

After being reduced in numbers, the hosts fought on valiantly and Dirk Kuyt managed to score the only goal of the game, and consequently claim the three points.

"That is what derbies are all about," Gerrard told Sky Sports 1.

"There was passion, commitment and fight. We beat a very good Everton side today with 10-men and we should enjoy this result.

"We played some good football and had a great attitude, sticking together. We knew we would be up against it at times and if we had the chance at a set-piece we could grab a goal."

In a fiery encounter that saw both sides going at each others throats, the skipper applauded the referee for not trying to be card-happy and allowing some sort of flow to the game.

"The ref was superb," said Gerrard.

"He let tackles go and that's what fans pay their money for. There were some mis-timed tackles but we can't complain and I don't think Everton will either."
