Manchester City winger Adam Johnson eager to avoid 'new Robinho' tag
'Star-struck' new signing just wants to be himself
By Alan Dawson
Adam Johnson's switch from Middlesbrough to Manchester City was the priciest transfer involving a Premier League side during the mid-season window (£7 million), but the winger is eager to avoid comparisons with the player he has effectively replaced: Robinho.
The Brazilian forward, who broke British transfer records following City's successful £32m bid, has been sent to Santos on loan, with Johnson slotting into Roberto Mancini's squad in his stead.
"A few of my old team-mates have been giving me a bit of banter, saying I've come to City to replace Robinho," the 22-year-old told The Sun.
"He was the British transfer record signing and he's gone and I've come in.
"But I'm not thinking about replacing Robinho or anyone else. I'm just going to try and be my own person.
"I'm a bit star-struck at some of the players to be honest," Johnson candidly said. "It's strange but I'll get used to it.
"I have to try and not get carried away but I'm proud to be here."
