Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp insists that striker Jermain Defoe is as good as his England team-mate Wayne Rooney when it comes to scoring goals for his club.

The former West Ham United forward decimated the Leeds United back line with his third hat-trick of the season, as Spurs ran out 3-1 winners in Wednesday's FA Cup clash.

The stellar performance took Defoe's tally of goals to 20 for the season, while Rooney's is currently at 21 in domestic competitions.

"Someone said the 'Southern Softies' might not like the weather - well it didn’t turn out like that," Redknapp said, according to The Mirror.

“It was a well-deserved win. I was delighted with the way we played. We had lots of good chances.

"[It was] nice to see Jermain get his hat-trick. He could have had six, he had so many chances. He probably missed three easier chances. He is always a threat.

“I signed him as a 15-year-old and used to watch him score every week from when he was a young boy.

"He is up there with Rooney, who is the best striker I have seen in years, as the best front-man.

“Defoe is a terrific finisher. His confidence is good. Crouchy [Peter Crouch] does well for him, flicking balls on. We got good service in."

The victory puts Spurs through to the fifth round, where they will meet Bolton Wanderers.

Redknapp said: “We have had one defeat in 13 games. We are playing well. We are in with a chance in the FA Cup but Bolton is a tough tie."

The Lilywhites boss also had praise for Leeds and their fans, adding: “The atmosphere was cracking. The crowd showed the sooner they get back to the top flight the better.”
