World Cup 2010: Family doctor thinks Salvador Cabanas could recover in time to play for Paraguay
Cabanas' doctor says he has a chance of making the World Cup...
By Rupert Fryer
While many respected the Paraguayan striker's unbelievable spirit, making the World Cup seemed highly unlikely. The Cabanas’ family doctor, however, has now refused to rule out the possibility of the forward making the trip South Africa this summer.
"I see no reason why, when you need to disclose the [Paraguay] squad, Cabanas should not be on the list," he said.
"He should not be discarded. We will monitor his progress over the next two or three months and then give an opinion."
Following numerous complications, Cabanas’ condition has been improving in the last few days and Celso Fretes, the Paraguayan doctor hired by the Cabanas family, is optimistic about the 29-year-old's rapid recovery so far.
"The evolution of it, the speed with which he was treated, the quality of medical care for him at the time and his current physical condition indicates that his recovery is extremely favourable," Fretes told Radio Telefuturo.
Fretes also revealed he and the Cabanas family were considering taking the striker to America to continue his recovery.
