Fulham confirmed on Monday the signing of Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey on a loan deal until the end of the season.

There is also an option for the move to be made permanent in the summer.

"The club can confirm that Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey has joined on loan until the end of the 2009/10 Premier League season, with an option to buy following the loan spell with the Whites," a statement on the Cottagers' official website reads.

Shorey began his career at Leyton Orient before joining Reading in 2001, where he became an integral part of the side that reached the Premier League, and featured for England.

He joined Villa in 2008 after the Royals' relegation but has struggled to find a regular starting role in Martin O'Neill's team.

He had spent some time at Nottingham Forest on loan before Christmas, but will now spend the rest of this campaign in the Premier League at Craven Cottage.
