Ben Watson looking for chances at Wigan Athletic

Midfielder hoping to impress Latics Roberto Martinez...

EPL: Ben Watson, Wigan Athletic - Hull (PA)
Wigan Athletic midfielder Ben Watson is hoping that his recent form is enough to secure a future with the Latics.

The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to Championship side Queens Park Rangers at the start of the current campaign by boss Roberto Marinez, but the 24-year-old is hoping he can impress after returning to Wigan earlier this month.

The former Crystal Palace player came on as a substitute in Wigan’s 4-1 over Hull in the FA Cup and scored a vital late equaliser last weekend to ensure a replay with Notts County.

Watson made just ten appearances for Wigan last season after his £2 million pound move from Crystal Palace, but he is now hoping to hold down a regular place in Martinez’s squad.

"My target now for the rest of the year is to get into the Wigan team and stay there," he told The Evening Post.

"I have spoken to the gaffer about it since I got back, and it's all down to me now.

"I have to work as hard as I can and we'll see what happens.

"My priority is to stay here and play here. I enjoy it here and I just want to play here."

Watson clearly didn’t feature in Martinez’s plans as the Spaniard brought in several midfields after taking charge in the summer and a loan deal to QPR was arranged.

The former England under-21 international impressed whilst on loan at Loftus Road and was grateful of the experience.

"I got exactly what I wanted out of the loan move. The aim was to play games, and that's what I did," he added.

"I played every minute of every game I was available for, and I was delighted with that.

"I really enjoyed my time there, and I think you do enjoy yourself a lot more when you are playing regularly. It's what you get paid to do."
