Arsenal are unlikely to sign anyone in January - Arsene Wenger
Missing out on Smalling ends Gunners' January dealing...
By Zack Wilson
The 20-year-old defender ended up choosing Manchester United rather than the Gunners this week, and Wenger admits that that might be it as far as the north Londoners' transfer dealings are concerned.
"It is not impossible [to sign a player before window shuts], but at the moment it is unlikely," the Frenchman told reporters at his Friday press conference.
Although disappointed to miss out on a player of Samlling's potential, Wenger confirmed that the Gunners had come close to landing him.
He also wished the player well at Old Trafford, where he thinks he will go on to have a wonderful career.
"Manchester United got Smalling in the end. I am sorry because we were very close to getting him and we were on the case very early," Wenger added.
"I wish the player well. At the end of the day it is important he has a good career.
"In both clubs he has a good chance to make a great career. The most important thing is he does that."
