2010 has begun phenomenally well for Barcelona's Lionel Messi as the Argentine has already scored five goals in La Liga this January and has claimed top spot in the race for the Primera Division's Pichichi - the highest scorer in La Liga - in a comparative report by Sport.

The Balon d'Or winner has already scored a hat-trick in 2010, against Tenerife, and this past weekend bagged a brace against Sevilla, his 100th and 101st goals for Barcelona, the youngest player in the club's history to reach three figures.

Conversely, despite his hot form to end 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo has so far been unable to mount an assault to reclaim his World Player of the Year title, and has not yet found the back of the net in 2010.

The attention and comparisons between the Portuguese and the Argentinian will likely increase as the Liga race heats up and both Barca and Madrid mount an assault on this season's Champions League knockout competition.
