Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has revealed the club's disappointment at crashing out of the FA Cup at the third round stage for the first time in 25 years, after losing 1-0 to rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford.

"It's a major blow, this,” assistant manager Mike Phelan told BBC Sport.

“I think Leeds deserved it.

“We didn't commit ourselves to the task in the way that we should do.”

Leeds didn’t give the hosts any time on the ball and Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute.

“Leeds went about their task very effectively," he added.

“We shouldn't give away a goal like that at our level. We gave belief to their supporters."

It is the first time during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Manchester United that the Red Devils have lost to lower league opposition in the competition.
