Scottish Premier League pair Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian are working in conjunction with local police ahead of the Edinburgh derby at Easter Road on Sunday to help raise awareness of domestic violence.

Hearts and Hibs will don white ribbon badges as a pledge of support for the White Ribbon Campaign against domestic violence.

Hibernian manager John Hughes voiced his support for the campaign.

"Hibernian is delighted to support Lothian and Borders Police in their efforts to tackle domestic abuse," said Hughes, who has guided his team to third place in the SPL in his first season in charge.

'We hope that by wearing white ribbons during the derby match our players will help highlight this important issue to a wide audience."

Hearts captain Michael Stewart added: "The Hearts’ players are pleased to support this very important campaign during such a high profile game against our city rivals.”

Chief Superintendent Gill Imery, of the safer communities department, highlighted the extent of domestic violence over Christmas, saying: "Unfortunately, during the festive period, incidents of domestic abuse are known to increase.

"As a result, Lothian and Borders Police are actively trying to raise awareness of this issue and of organisations which can provide support, advice and assistance."

Fans attending the match at Easter Road will also be sent a message from Lothian and Borders Police to their phones via bluetooth, asking them never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence.
